2006 Washington Flood

A recent example of a flood in Washington is the 2006 flood. Three rivers were to see record flooding in this flood, and more than eighteen counties were declared a state wide disaster area. Christine Gregoire then called on the National Guard to help evacuate the citizens. in many counties, volunteers were called upon to help build sandbag walls to keep the flooding at bay.
Flooding was the most dangerous in low land areas because it caught many off guard, and were forced to leave with little to no notice. In the wilderness, more that 200 elk hunters had to be evacuated because their hunting camps were near flooding areas. When Red Cross arrived, they immediately started setting up relief centers at schools in the counties that were in the most need of help. This included the Stanwood High school, and the Old Dieringer School. But the worst damage was on Mount Rainer. Mud and landslides swept the area, and they were still cleaning the park up more than a year later. Their main focus though was to make the park accessible to visitors. When the damage was examined with a steadier eye, they discovered that utility and commercial power would have to be fixed along with the sewer and water systems.
This flood was nicknamed the pineapple storm because it came directly from Hawaii. All of the moisture that was in Hawaii, was funneled up to Washington, on a weather conveyor belt. And then, all of the moisture was dumped into Washington.
This is an image of a town during the 2006 flood of Washington. As you can see, everything is flooded, and almost everyone experienced some kind of water related damage.
